Shower Door Basics

measuring for your shower door

Before You Buy

The perfect shower door serves as the cornerstone of your entire bathroom design. Before you place your order, make sure you have the answers to three questions:

  • What wall materials are used in your bathroom?Ensure that your bathroom walls can properly support your shower door. While thinner glass works in nearly any space, heavier glass only works with sturdier wall materials.
  • Where are the wall studs? Before you order, confirm where your wall studs are located since this is where your door and hinges are mounted. Heavier glass doors will require double studs at the hinge side and threshold.
  • What is the shape of your shower? Is your shower area an inline, return, or corner space?

How to Measure Your Shower Space

Measuring the size of your enclosure is the first step toward a perfectly fitted installation. The following guidelines can help you achieve a precise measurement:

  1. Ensure that finished wall material is in place before measuring.
  2. Take lengthwise measurements at the bottom, center, and top of your enclosure.
  3. Check all surfaces and walls for level. If any surface is out of level by 3/8 inches or more, a tapered filler is recommended.
  4. Measure your available height (from shower curb to ceiling) and requested height (from shower curb to the desired height of your door)

How to Find Your Perfect Shower Door

Once you’ve measured your shower space, it’s time to put on your designer’s hat and pick out your ideal shower door. Here are a few questions to help you narrow down your options:

  • Where are you using the door?Start by determining whether you want to enclose a bathtub or prefer a shower without a tub.
  • How will it open? Do you prefer your shower door to slide open and closed, or do you want it to swing? Choose between swing, sliding, rolling, and panel styles.
  • Do you want a frame? Based on the shape of your shower, decide whether you need a framed, semi-frameless, or completely frameless shower door. All options offer a sophisticated look.
